Udaipur, April 23 (Udaipur Kiran): Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) have successfully treated a rare dual condition involving psoas hernia and appendicitis in a patient.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal said the patient had been admitted with intermittent abdominal pain for nearly a month, along with constipation and vomiting over the past three days. Detailed investigations and imaging revealed the presence of a psoas hernia, a rare form of lumbar hernia, along with appendicitis.

He explained that psoas hernia, more precisely referred to as lumbar hernia, occurs near the superior lumbar triangle close to the psoas muscle. It is extremely rare and accounts for less than one percent of all abdominal wall hernia cases. In this case, the hernia sac contained the distal ileum, appendix and cecum, making the condition more complex.

The patient, who was specially-abled, received completely free treatment under the Bhamashah scheme at PIMS.

The treatment was carried out successfully through laparoscopic surgery, where both hernia reduction and laparoscopic appendectomy were performed in a single session. The operation was led by Dr P P Sharma, Professor and Head of the General Surgery Department.

The surgical team included Dr Shreyas, Dr Mahavir and Ashok, while anaesthesia support was provided by Dr Kamlesh and Dr Piyush along with their team.

Post-surgery, the patient remained stable with no complications and was discharged in a healthy condition. The case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and the effectiveness of modern minimally invasive techniques in treating complex and rare conditions.
