
Udaipur: The Faculty of Science at Pacific University organized a one-day seminar on “Ancient Indian Mathematicians” under the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) initiative. The seminar highlighted the profound contributions of ancient Indian mathematicians to the field of mathematics and its relevance in the modern era.
Preserving the Legacy of Indian Knowledge
University President Professor Hemant Kothari inaugurated the seminar, emphasizing the significance of the Indian Knowledge Tradition, a system that has enriched India’s education heritage since ancient times.
Professor Dilendra Hiran, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, shed light on the contributions of Indian mathematicians. “Without the concept of zero, the development of the decimal number system would have been impossible,” he remarked, underlining the revolutionary advancements made by ancient scholars.
Focus on Key Mathematicians
Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Rameshwar Ameta, elaborated on the monumental contributions of legendary mathematicians such as Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskaracharya, and Lilavati. He highlighted how their groundbreaking work continues to inspire generations of mathematicians worldwide.
Insights from the Keynote Speaker
The seminar’s keynote address was delivered by Dr. Naresh Menaria, who captivated the audience with his lecture on the celebrated Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Dr. Menaria explained concepts such as Ramanujan’s Magic Square and the Hardy-Ramanujan Number, showcasing Ramanujan’s genius and its impact on mathematical theory.
To further enrich the experience, students were shown a short film on Srinivasa Ramanujan, providing a deeper understanding of his life, work, and contributions to mathematics.
