Devotees Gather for Grand Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Temple

Ujjain, October 4 (Udaipur Kiran) : Early on October 4, 2026, a magnificent Bhasma Aarti was held at the renowned Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The event, taking place on the ninth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin, drew a large number of devotees eager to witness the divine adornment of Lord Mahakal. The temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal” and “Har Har Mahadev,” creating a vibrant atmosphere.

As per tradition, the temple doors were opened following the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, accompanied by the sounds of drums and conch shells. Once the doors opened at dawn, priests commenced the rituals, first offering water to the deity. This was followed by a sacred bath using Panchamrit, a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices.

Post the bath, Lord Mahakal was adorned with exquisite decorations. The priests decorated the deity with bhang, sandalwood, and vermilion, and adorned him with fragrant flowers such as mogra and roses. Lord Mahakal was adorned with a silver crown, a fig garland, and a bhang necklace, while floral offerings filled the altar. Devotees also presented fruits, dried fruits, and sweets as offerings.

Before the Bhasma Aarti commenced, sacred ash was offered to Lord Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. As the divine form of Lord Mahakal became visible amidst the sacred ash, the entire temple complex was enveloped in devotion. The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of jingling cymbals, drums, and conch shells, moving thousands of devotees to bow in reverence.

The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Temple holds a unique tradition and profound religious significance. It is believed that only after the offering of ash does Lord Mahakal reveal his divine form to his devotees, drawing worshippers from across the country and beyond to Ujjain for this extraordinary event.
