Four Compact Hybrid SUVs That Could Launch in India Soon, Including Toyota and Maruti

October 4, 2026: Demand for hybrid cars is gradually increasing in the Indian market. As more buyers look for better fuel efficiency without moving to larger and more expensive vehicles, several carmakers are reportedly preparing hybrid technology for the compact SUV segment.

Toyota and Maruti

At present, hybrid options such as the Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Invicto are positioned in larger and relatively expensive segments. However, the upcoming models could bring hybrid technology to more affordable compact SUVs. Some of these models have been confirmed, while others are based on reports.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx could become the company’s first sub-4-metre SUV to receive its own strong-hybrid technology. According to reports, Maruti Suzuki is testing the system.

The SUV could use a new 1.2-litre Z-Series three-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and battery pack. Unlike the mild-hybrid system currently available with the Fronx, the strong-hybrid setup could allow the SUV to run on electric power for short distances.

The hybrid system could be introduced with the next update of the Fronx.

Kia Sonet Hybrid

The next-generation Kia Sonet is expected to be launched in India in 2027. The new model is expected to be based on Kia’s K1 platform.

One of the biggest updates could be the addition of a hybrid powertrain. Kia has confirmed that it is considering bringing HEV technology to the Sonet in India. The system could be showcased by 2028 or 2029.

The company has not yet revealed details about the engine, electric motor or battery. The hybrid version is expected to arrive after the launch of the next-generation Sonet.

Honda’s New Compact SUV

Honda is also preparing to return to India’s sub-4-metre SUV segment. The company has confirmed plans to launch a new India-focused compact SUV by 2028.

The upcoming model is expected to compete with the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Honda has not yet revealed its powertrain details.

However, reports suggest that the company could consider a hybrid powertrain alongside a petrol engine. The SUV will be developed specifically with the Indian market in mind.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor Hybrid

Toyota’s compact Urban Cruiser Taisor could also receive hybrid technology in the future. According to reports, Toyota could use Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming Z-Series-based strong-hybrid system in the SUV.
