Doha, Qatar – In light of escalating security threats, Qatar Airways has implemented a temporary ban on pagers and walkie-talkies for all passengers departing from Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY). The restriction applies to both checked and carry-on baggage, as well as cargo.
This decision follows a directive from the Lebanese Directorate General of Civil Aviation, issued in response to a series of devastating explosions involving these devices in Lebanon. The incidents have resulted in a significant number of casualties, with at least 20 people killed and hundreds injured in recent days.
The ban comes amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified their military operations against the militant group, targeting its capabilities and infrastructure. These actions follow coordinated attacks by Hezbollah that have caused substantial damage and loss of life.
The IDF has accused Hezbollah of using civilian structures for military purposes, prompting the increased military activity. The Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has described the situation as entering a “new phase” and emphasized the need for a significant shift in security measures to ensure the safety of residents in northern Israel.
As the situation continues to evolve, emergency responders from the Lebanese Red Cross have been working tirelessly to assist the victims of the explosions and provide medical care to the injured.
