North Indian Drivers to Sing Maharashtra Song Next Year

Mumbai, May 2: The ongoing debate over the Marathi language in Mumbai has intensified political rhetoric. In a significant announcement, North Indian taxi and rickshaw drivers have declared their intention to sing the Maharashtra song on May 1, 2027. Responding to this, Kripashankar Singh stated that he accepts the “challenge” posed by the state government.

In an interview with a news agency, Singh expressed his deep affection for the Marathi language, emphasizing that it has always been respected and will continue to be in the future. He affirmed that the North Indian community will always stand up for the identity of Maharashtra.

Singh also remarked that individuals should learn the language of the place they reside in, as failing to do so could be detrimental. He noted that not knowing Marathi is a personal shortcoming for him as well.

He described Hindi, Marathi, and Indian culture as interconnected, referring to them as “sisters” that should be seen as complementary to each other.

On the same issue, Congress party’s state president Harshvardhan Sapkal advised against politicizing the matter during a media interaction. He stated that Marathi is the native language of Maharashtra, and it is everyone’s duty to become familiar with the local language where they live. He urged that since a significant number of people in the state speak Marathi, all should make an effort to learn and speak it as a mark of respect.

The ongoing debate regarding the proposal to make the Marathi language mandatory for auto and taxi drivers has now become a topic of discussion at both social and political levels, highlighting issues of language, identity, and respect for local culture.
