New Delhi, May 2: A political controversy has erupted over allegations that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann attended an assembly session inebriated. Leaders from various parties have expressed strong reactions, questioning the Chief Minister’s conduct.
Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal made serious accusations, claiming that Mann delivered a speech while under the influence of alcohol. She raised concerns about how such behavior is acceptable from someone in a responsible position. Maliwal further alleged that Mann often visits religious sites in a drunken state and that discussions about his drinking habits were common among his colleagues when he was a Member of Parliament.
Maliwal emphasized that Mann’s drinking problem is not a personal issue, given that he leads Punjab, a sensitive border state adjacent to Pakistan. She stated that important files are signed under the influence, benefiting Arvind Kejriwal, who is perceived to be running Punjab like a personal ATM.
She demanded an immediate alcohol test for Mann, claiming that the Speaker had dismissed the request and called for his dismissal.
BJP national spokesperson RP Singh noted that this is not the first time Mann has faced such allegations, referencing incidents from 2015, 2019, and 2022 where he was reportedly seen intoxicated in public. Singh also recalled that Mann had publicly vowed not to drink alcohol after swearing on his mother in 2019.
Congress leader Shama Mohammad echoed similar accusations, asserting that it is well-known that Mann consumes alcohol and has appeared drunk in Parliament.
In this context, Shiromani Akali Dal Vice President Parambans Singh Romana stated that these are not mere allegations, as videos have surfaced on social media and television showing the Chief Minister in a concerning state. He mentioned that some legislators have requested the Speaker to conduct alcohol tests for all members.
