Kathmandu, 22 December (Udaipur Kiran) – The Nepal Army will take charge of the security command 30 days before the parliamentary elections scheduled for 5 March. Although the decision to deploy the army was initially made in the last week of November, the Nepal Army will not immediately enter the field.
Assistant Army Spokesperson Rajaram Basnet stated, “To ensure free, fair, fearless, and credible elections, the Nepal Army is prioritising election security tasks based on the representative House Election Security Plan approved by the Central Security Committee, keeping the circumstances in mind. We will commence our operations 30 days before the elections.”
According to the security plan, the Nepal Army has been assigned responsibility for the printing and transportation security of ballot papers. Additionally, the army will be deployed during the election period to safeguard important structures and establishments protected by the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force. The army will assume security responsibility at these locations 30 days before the elections. The army will also handle the defusing of suspicious explosive materials during the election, a role it has performed in previous elections as well.
Spokesperson Basnet mentioned that there is no significant change in the role of the Nepal Army compared to previous elections. He said, “The role we played earlier will remain the same this time. We will manage security arrangements according to the integrated security plan and prevailing conditions. We will continue to be deployed on the outer perimeter.”
Earlier, senior government officials had indicated that the army would be deployed three months before the elections. However, as per the new decision, the Nepal Army is currently engaged in joint exercises and other preparations for the elections. Security assessments are being conducted for each district, and plans are being formulated accordingly. The army is also preparing to publicly share information about its activities related to election security.
