Glasgow, July 28: President Droupadi Murmu commended weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for her remarkable performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where she secured a bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting event on Monday.
In a message posted on the social media platform ‘X’, President Murmu congratulated Bindyarani, stating, “Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your spirit and determination have elevated the country’s pride. This achievement inspires young athletes across the nation.”
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan also extended his congratulations, saying, “Heartfelt congratulations to Bindyarani Devi for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Your strength, courage, and unwavering dedication have brought another moment of pride for India on the international stage. This achievement will pave the way for even greater success.”
Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya wrote on ‘X’, “Passion, grip, and success. Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg category and securing India’s fifth medal in weightlifting. Keep raising the nation’s pride.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised her efforts, stating, “Well done, Bindyarani Devi. You have made us proud by winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Best wishes for your future endeavors.”
Bindyarani added another medal to the country’s growing tally by lifting a total of 199 kg; she achieved 87 kg in the snatch and 112 kg in the clean and jerk. The weightlifter from Manipur had previously won a silver medal in the 55 kg weight class at the 2022 Games held in Birmingham.
Nigeria’s Rafiatou Folashade Lawal dominated the event, lifting a total of 229 kg (103 kg snatch + 126 kg clean and jerk) to claim gold, while Canada’s An Sophie Tashereau secured silver with a total of 215 kg (94 kg snatch + 121 kg clean and jerk).
