Glasgow, July 28: In a remarkable display of talent, India secured four additional medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 late Monday night (Indian time). The nation clinched a gold and a bronze medal in the women’s shot put F57 event, along with one silver medal each in high jump and men’s 79-kilogram weightlifting. With a total of 10 medals (2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze), India currently stands in eighth place in the medal tally.
Indian para-athlete Sharmila delivered an outstanding performance in the women’s shot put F57 final, achieving her best throw of 9.81 meters to win gold. Her six attempts included throws of 9.48, 9.58, 9.81, 9.17, 9.37, and 9.60 meters, with the 9.81 meters marking her season best.
Ghana’s Jinabu Isah secured the silver medal with a best throw of 8.65 meters, while India’s Shilpa Kanchugarkoppalu Shaila earned bronze with a personal best of 7.26 meters after attempts of 6.69, 6.95, 7.26, 6.91, and 7.09 meters.
In the men’s high jump, Indian athlete Sarvesh Anil Kushare also shone brightly, claiming silver with a jump of 2.25 meters. He narrowly missed out on gold against Jamaica’s Romane Beckford, with both athletes clearing the same height but the decision made based on the number of attempts.
In the men’s 79-kilogram weightlifting category, Valluri Ajay Babu brought home another silver medal, lifting a total of 330 kilograms (149 kg in snatch and 181 kg in clean and jerk). Malaysia’s Eri Hidayat Muhammad topped the category with a total of 331 kilograms, setting a game record.
