Madhya Pradesh Braces for Intense Heat as Temperatures Soar Near 40°C

BHOPAL, March 24: As March draws to a close, Madhya Pradesh is witnessing a rapid rise in temperatures, with several regions approaching the 40°C mark. Following spells of rain and hail earlier in the month, the state is now entering a phase of intense heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that hot winds are expected between March 27 and 31, signalling the onset of summer conditions.

Temperatures

Ratlam Sizzles at 39°C, Western MP Most Affected

On Sunday, Ratlam recorded the highest temperature at 39°C, while Narmadapuram reached 38.8°C. Districts under the Gwalior, Indore, and Ujjain divisions reported the most significant heat, making them the hottest regions in the state currently. Other notable highs included 37.4°C in Dhar, 37°C in Khargone, 36.5°C in Guna and Betul, 36.4°C in Narsinghpur, and 36°C in Mandla.

In major urban centres, Ujjain emerged as the hottest city with 36°C, followed by Indore at 35.4°C, Bhopal at 35.1°C, Jabalpur at 34.9°C, and Gwalior at 34.7°C. The IMD has indicated that temperatures are expected to rise further on Monday and Tuesday, with an increase of 2–3°C anticipated.

Western Disturbance Has Minimal Impact

While a Western Disturbance is currently active over the Himalayan region, it is not strong enough to significantly affect Madhya Pradesh’s weather. As a result, clear skies and intense sunshine are expected to dominate the coming days. Monday is forecast to be particularly hot with sharp sunlight increasing daytime discomfort.

The IMD noted that Sunday marked a general upward trend in temperatures across the state, indicating the beginning of a longer hot spell.

Heatwave Expected in April and May

Looking ahead, meteorologists predict that between March 27 and 31, several areas across Madhya Pradesh could experience severe heat, with the possibility of heatwave conditions in some districts. Maximum temperatures are likely to exceed 40°C in many cities.

The state is expected to face intense summer conditions for the next four months. The IMD estimates that 15 to 20 days of heatwaves could occur between March and May, with April and May bearing the brunt of the extreme heat. This could result in 30 to 35 days of hot, dry winds blowing across the state.
