Kolkata, March 16: South Bengal continues to face intense heat, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heatwave alert for five districts—Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum—from Saturday to Monday. These areas are expected to experience temperatures rising at least five degrees Celsius above normal, intensifying discomfort for residents already battling soaring heat and humidity.

Heatwave Conditions to Persist Until Monday
According to the IMD, the affected districts will face severe heatwave conditions starting Saturday, extending through the weekend and into Monday. The highest temperatures are anticipated in Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, West Bardhaman, Birbhum, and additionally Purulia district on Sunday and Monday. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and stay adequately hydrated during this period.
Intense Humidity and Heat Across Other Districts
Apart from these five districts, intense humidity coupled with hot conditions will continue to trouble residents in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, East Bardhaman, Purulia, Murshidabad, and Nadia. With little relief expected initially, residents are advised to take precautionary measures and remain indoors during peak daytime heat.
Relief Expected from Wednesday Onwards
The IMD forecasts significant relief starting Wednesday, as weather patterns are expected to shift, bringing thunderstorms and rainfall across the region. On Thursday and Friday, scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to occur in all districts of South Bengal, offering a much-awaited respite from the scorching heat.
Rain Predicted in North Bengal Districts
In North Bengal, rain is expected to cool down temperatures in the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong starting Sunday, with precipitation likely to continue intermittently into Monday, covering Alipurduar district as well. However, dry weather is expected in the other districts of North Bengal, where temperatures may rise by two to four degrees Celsius during the next few days.
