New Delhi, February 15: Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh praised the consortium-driven innovation model at the IIT Madras Research Park on Sunday. He stated that this model has enabled the swift and accurate commercialization of technology, which is now being adopted by various academic institutions and universities across the country.
During his visit to the Immersive Technology and Entrepreneurship Labs (ITEL) Foundation and other advanced research facilities at IIT Madras, Dr. Singh noted, “This model is now being embraced by other academic institutions and universities.”
He reviewed ongoing projects in areas such as urban mobility, space technology, medical devices, and brain research during his visit. Dr. Singh emphasized that the consortium approach, which involves industry partners from the early stages of research and development, ensures that innovations meet real-world needs.
“This integrated model allows for quicker transformation of research outcomes into practical, market-ready solutions,” he added.
The ITEL Foundation, established in July 2024 as a not-for-profit Section 8 company and recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, aims to position India as a global technology leader. It brings together academic institutions, industry leaders, and investors to collaboratively develop deep-tech innovations and transfer them directly to the commercial sector.
A notable demonstration during this visit was the HASHTIC Mobility Initiative, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Indian cities. This project proposes to operate AI-enabled small electric vehicles on elevated tracks above existing roads, aiming to reduce a 15-kilometer commute to approximately 20 minutes.
Dr. Singh also reviewed the work of Agnikul Cosmos, a private space startup incubated within the IIT Madras ecosystem. The company develops launch vehicles for flexible, on-demand satellite launches and successfully completed its first mission in May 2024 with support from the Indian Space Research Organization and In-Space. The startup is now preparing for its commercial mission of a reusable rocket by the end of this year, showcasing the growing role of private players in India’s space sector.
