Abigail Spanberger Becomes Virginia’s First Woman Governor

According to reports by The Washington Post and The Hill, Spanberger’s victory was confirmed after polling stations in Virginia closed on Tuesday evening and vote counting began. The election was widely viewed as a referendum on the administration of former President Donald Trump.

In the final days of campaigning, both parties made strong appeals to voters. Former President Barack Obama appeared in Norfolk to support Spanberger and other Democrats, while Donald Trump addressed Republican supporters through a telephonic interaction, urging them to back GOP candidates.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin told volunteers in Williamsburg on Monday that their victory would come from fielding strong candidates focused on issues that matter most to people.

A former CIA officer and U.S. Congress member, Spanberger ran her campaign on key issues such as education, economic growth, and protecting democracy. In her victory speech in Richmond, she said Virginia had chosen “pragmatism over partisanship and civility over chaos.”
