Jhunjhunu, August 4 (Udaipur Kiran). At Dhankhar Hospital in Jhunjhunu, Dr. Sanjay Dhankhar mistakenly removed a healthy kidney instead of the infected one during surgery on a woman, leading to her death on Sunday evening. The woman, Eid Bano (54) from Nua village in Jhunjhunu, underwent treatment at Jaipur’s SMS Hospital for 76 days. On May 15, during an operation at Dhankhar Hospital, the doctor removed the healthy kidney instead of the infected one, leading to a critical condition.
Eid Bano had been suffering from severe abdominal pain, and her family brought her to Dhankhar Hospital. Dr. Sanjay Dhankhar suggested that her recurring pain from kidney stones could only be alleviated by removing the kidney, claiming it would otherwise worsen and cause lifelong pain. The surgery was performed on May 15. By May 17, Eid Bano’s urine contained pus, and her pain intensified. When questioned, the doctor advised the family to take her to Jaipur and not to mention the previous surgery at SMS Hospital. The family admitted her to the Jaipur hospital on May 21, where tests revealed that the left kidney had been removed, while the infection was actually in the right kidney.
Following this revelation, a case was filed based on Eid Bano’s statements on May 30. Dr. Sanjay Dhankhar was arrested in Rajkot, Gujarat, on June 5. Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar took action by canceling the hospital’s registration and removing it from various government schemes.
A committee of five doctors, formed by the district collector to investigate the kidney scandal, found Dr. Sanjay Dhankhar guilty. The investigation revealed that Dr. Dhankhar, a general surgeon, should have had a nephrologist or urologist present during the kidney surgery. Additionally, the removed kidney should have undergone a biopsy, which was not done. Instead, the kidney was left on a tray and became infected, a significant act of negligence. The committee confirmed that Dr. Dhankhar removed the healthy kidney instead of the infected one. Dr. Sanjay Dhankhar had previously faced accusations of negligence. He was a surgeon at the Government BDK Hospital until he was suspended in 2017 following a patient’s death due to negligence. He then left the government job and opened his own hospital.
