Srinagar, October 1 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Kashmir Marathon 2026 was officially launched in Srinagar on October 1, with Additional Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Nitish Kumar, flagging off the event. This year’s marathon attracted participants from all walks of life, reflecting a strong community spirit.
Speaking to the media, Kumar noted that the turnout exceeded expectations, particularly impressive given that the event was held on a working day. He mentioned that many runners and sports enthusiasts traveled from outside Jammu and Kashmir to take part in the marathon.
“The ‘Run for Unity’ marathon organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police has seen a remarkable participation, especially considering today is a workday,” Kumar stated. He expressed delight at the diverse participation, which included children, women, and differently-abled individuals, describing it as truly heartwarming.
Kumar also emphasized the importance of sports in keeping youth away from substance abuse. “Sports serve as a powerful medium to keep our children and youth away from drugs. The enthusiastic participation of our youth clearly indicates that they are successfully combating the threat of substance abuse in Kashmir,” he remarked.
One participant highlighted the significance of the marathon for young people, stating, “Every youth should take part in this Unity Marathon. It is crucial for us. I traveled from Uri in Baramulla district to join this event. This marathon is particularly important for those youths who are leaning towards substance abuse. My message to them is to abandon these harmful activities and focus on improving their physical health.”
