Kolkata, October 1 (Udaipur Kiran) : Four individuals, including Govind Kar, the brother-in-law of former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Ajit Maity, have been arrested in Kolkata for allegedly committing financial fraud related to false promises of job placements. The arrests occurred on October 1, following a complaint from a victim who claimed he was promised a job in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) after paying ₹5 lakh.
Ajit Maity, who is already in police custody for a separate case, was implicated in this job scam. Along with Kar, the police also arrested Maity’s driver, Amal Bhuiyan, and an associate, Pranab Mandal, also known as Sahab. The arrests were made at Kar’s residence in Madpur, where authorities seized cash and several gold ornaments during the search.
In a related operation, police raided Mandal’s home in his ancestral village of Phulgeria, confiscating important documents and a laptop. The complainant alleged that despite paying the amount in 2025 for his wife’s job, he was never hired and was threatened when he sought a refund.
After filing a written complaint at the Kharagpur local police station on September 26, the investigation led to the recent arrests. Although Maity had received bail in a previous case in Pingla, he has been in custody for four days regarding the new allegations in Kharagpur. The arrested individuals were presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Midnapore, where the court ordered them to be held in police custody for two days on charges related to the job fraud and failure to return the money.
Defense lawyer Mrinal Chaudhary noted that Ajit Maity is scheduled to appear in court again on October 3, as per the court’s directive for the accused to remain in police custody until further notice.
