Why Mint Matters Even in Winter: Helps Ease Cold and Congestion

New Delhi, 24 November (Udaipur Kiran)। Mint is usually seen as a summer herb, but Ayurveda and modern research suggest that it can be equally beneficial during winter. Despite its cooling nature, the herb contains medicinal compounds that help relieve several cold-season ailments.

Ayurvedic experts recommend consuming mint in moderate quantities even during winter as part of daily meals or herbal preparations. According to Ayurveda, mint helps balance kapha, supports digestion and aids the body’s natural cleansing process. It is known for its deepan and pachan properties—improving appetite and digestion.

Mint contains menthol, antioxidants, vitamin A, iron, fibre and antimicrobial compounds that support the body’s defence system. Scientific studies show that menthol helps open respiratory passages, providing relief from blocked nose and throat congestion. This is why many cough syrups, lozenges and balms contain mint extracts.

During winter, slow digestion, gas, acidity and heaviness are common complaints. Mint helps activate digestive enzymes, making food easier to process and reducing gas formation. It also relaxes intestinal muscles, easing cramps. Some studies indicate benefits for conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), though expert advice is recommended.

Mint also helps relieve cold, cough and throat irritation. Its menthol content reduces mucus, while its mild anti-inflammatory nature soothes throat pain. Many people use mint leaves or mint oil for steam inhalation to ease nasal congestion.

Beyond digestion and respiration, mint is useful for winter skin care. Cold weather often causes dryness, irritation and mild inflammation. Mint’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties provide cooling relief and help soothe itching or minor skin discomfort.

Mint continues to be a valuable herb through winter when used mindfully and in moderation.
