Leh, May 17: The wages for workers in Ladakh have been increased. Under the new arrangement, skilled workers will now receive ₹575, while unskilled workers will earn ₹450 per day. This payment will be based on the amount of work done, significantly boosting their income.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena announced the change in a social media post, stating, “This is a historic reform in Ladakh aimed at ensuring dignified wages for marginalized workers. I have ordered the rationalization of wages for daily laborers and part-time/need-based employees such as cleaners, gardeners, etc., who have been working for meager wages of ₹300 to ₹500 per month in various government departments for many years.”
The LG further mentioned that he has ordered a comprehensive verification of all such workers and a revision of their wages, to be completed within 20 days.
He emphasized that such low wages violated the principles of social justice. “We are committed to ensuring fair and dignified wages for all workers in accordance with the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act,” he added, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to providing essential public services across Ladakh.
Earlier, on April 27, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena announced the formation of five new districts in Ladakh—Nubra, Shyok, Changthang, Zanskar, and Dras—bringing the total number of districts from two (Leh and Kargil) to seven.
