Brussels, July 25: The European Union (EU) has imposed new sanctions on Iran, which the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, has labeled as a double standard.
In a post on the social media platform X, Baghaei stated that while the EU expresses concerns over human rights in Iran, it simultaneously supports military attacks against the country.
His comments came in response to a statement from EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, who had voiced concerns about the human rights situation in Iran.
Baghaei remarked, “The EU cannot make credible claims regarding human rights while allegedly providing technical and logistical support for military attacks against Iran that target civilians and critical national infrastructure.”
He accused the EU of avoiding condemnation of alleged war crimes and showing no sympathy for Iranian children killed in American and Israeli bombings and missile strikes. Baghaei described the EU’s stance as an example of “double standards.”
On Friday, Borrell announced the EU’s decision on X, stating, “The actions against its own citizens and the human rights situation in Iran cannot be ignored amid ongoing wars in the Middle East. The EU has imposed new sanctions on Iranian judges accused of serious human rights violations, including officials involved in actions against political dissidents and religious minorities.”
The EU has also sanctioned a key member of a cyber group accused of assisting the Iranian regime in information control and repressive activities. The EU emphasized that as Tehran intensifies its actions within the country, it will continue to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations.
The EU also clarified that it will keep a close watch on the state of civil liberties and human rights in Iran amid regional conflicts.
