Sandeep Patil: Stylish Cricketer Turned Successful Coach

New Delhi, August 17: Sandeep Patil is renowned as one of India’s aggressive and talented batsmen, who captured the hearts of fans with his attractive batting style and fearless approach. A member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, Patil has played several memorable innings, bringing glory to India in international cricket. Besides his cricketing career, he has also gained fame as an actor and coach.

Born on August 18, 1956, in Bombay, Sandeep Patil followed in the footsteps of his father, Madhusudan Patil, who played five first-class matches for Mumbai. Sandeep strengthened India’s middle order with his exceptional batting and contributed with his medium-pace bowling on numerous occasions.

He made his international debut on January 15, 1980, against Pakistan in Test cricket and also debuted in One Day Internationals (ODIs) later that year on December 6 against Australia.

In his Test career, Sandeep Patil scored 1,588 runs at an average of 36.93, including four centuries, in 29 matches. In ODIs, he amassed 1,005 runs at an average of 24.51, with nine half-centuries in 45 matches. His first-class career includes 8,156 runs in 130 matches and 1,741 runs in 73 List A matches, along with 24 wickets at the international level.

Patil played a crucial role in the 1983 World Cup, scoring 32 runs in the semi-final against England. He is also remembered for his unbeaten 129 runs in the Manchester Test against England in 1982, where he hit six boundaries in one over from fast bowler Bob Willis.

After retiring from cricket, Sandeep Patil ventured into acting, making his film debut in 1985 with ‘Kabhi Ajnabi The’, co-starring Poonam Dhillon and Debashree Roy, although he did not pursue further films.

A few years later, he transitioned to coaching, becoming the coach of the Kenyan national team in November 1996, where he enhanced the team’s performance. Under his guidance, Kenya reached the semi-finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup, where they faced a 91-run defeat against India. He has also coached the Oman cricket team.

Sandeep Patil served as the coach of the ‘India-A’ team and held the position of chairman of the BCCI selection committee from December 2012 to September 2016. During his tenure, India won the Champions Trophy in 2013. His achievements exemplify hard work, courage, and consistency.
