Seoul, September 8 (Udaipur Kiran) : North Korea’s Defense Minister Kim Song-gi has sharply criticized the ongoing joint military exercises, dubbed ‘Freedom Shield’, conducted by South Korea, the United States, and Japan, warning that such actions heighten regional security risks.
In a statement released through the Korean Central News Agency, Kim asserted that if the US and its allies attempt to escalate military confrontations against North Korea, Pyongyang would respond with “appropriate and firm countermeasures.” He emphasized that these exercises are pushing instability in the Korean Peninsula and beyond to unprecedented levels.
This marks Kim’s first public statement since his appointment as Defense Minister on August 29, succeeding No Kwang-chol. He also expressed objections to the US-led ‘Orient Shield’ military exercises, which involve Japan and Australia, and questioned the planned deployment of the US Army’s Multidomain Mobile Task Force in South Korea.
Kim accused the military cooperation among the US, Japan, and South Korea of transforming into an aggressive framework that includes nuclear elements, pointing out that the US has been continuously conducting military drills in the region.
He reiterated that North Korea would take stronger and more decisive actions in response to any activities deemed threatening by its adversaries. The ‘Freedom Shield’ exercises began on Monday and will last for five days, occurring at a time when major joint military drills by the US and South Korea have recently been limited under directives from President Donald Trump.
The rising military collaboration in the region and North Korea’s reaction has raised concerns about escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula once again.
