Russia Unleashes Devastating Assault on Kyiv Amid Ongoing War with Ukraine

Kyiv, May 24 – In one of the most intense strikes in recent weeks, Russia launched a massive overnight aerial assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and surrounding regions, leaving parts of the city in flames and citizens fleeing for shelter. The coordinated attack, involving a barrage of missiles and drones, appeared to be a retaliatory move following recent explosions in Moscow.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as explosions rocked the capital. Fires erupted in multiple districts, prompting hundreds of residents to seek refuge in underground metro stations. According to Kyiv’s acting military administration head, Tymur Tkachenkо, intercepted missile and drone debris landed in at least four urban districts. Six people were reported injured, and fires broke out in two locations in Kyiv’s Solomyansky district.

Mayhem in the Capital, Drone Debris Hits Residential Zones

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko had earlier warned residents of an incoming wave of over 20 Russian drones heading toward the capital. By morning, debris from the destroyed drones had struck a shopping mall and a residential building in Kyiv’s Obolonsky district, further escalating fears of continued strikes.

Attack Follows Prisoner Exchange Agreement

The assault came just hours after both nations began a long-delayed prisoner exchange process. As per Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 390 Ukrainian nationals were returned home in the first phase, with more releases anticipated over the weekend. Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed it had received an equal number of prisoners in return.

The swap reportedly took place along the northern Ukrainian border near Belarus. Released Russian soldiers have since been moved to Belarus for medical care. This exchange follows last week’s Istanbul meeting, where both parties agreed in principle to initiate humanitarian dialogue.

Ongoing War and Future Talks Remain Uncertain

Despite the prisoner exchange, there’s little sign of an imminent ceasefire. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated Friday that no location has yet been agreed upon for the next round of peace negotiations, though diplomatic channels remain open.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 788 Ukrainian drones between May 20 and May 23 — a testament to the intensifying nature of the conflict, now in its third year. Tens of thousands of soldiers from both sides have reportedly died since the invasion began.

As tensions rise yet again, the latest strike serves as a brutal reminder of the human cost of a war that continues to devastate cities and disrupt fragile hopes for peace.
