Srinagar, May 3 : In a fresh provocation, Pakistan’s army violated the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in multiple sectors of Jammu and Kashmir during the night of May 2-3, targeting Indian positions in Kupwara, Uri, and Akhnoor with small arms fire. Indian armed forces retaliated firmly and proportionately, according to senior military officials.
Escalating Tensions Since Pahalgam Terror Attack
The ceasefire violations come in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 lives, leading India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. Since then, the Pakistan Army has been persistently engaging in unprovoked firing to provoke Indian forces across LoC sectors.
Military sources revealed that this is the fourth consecutive night of cross-border firing. Similar ceasefire violations were reported:

Firing was also reported from the Pargwal sector along the International Border, marking the first IB violation in a week.
India’s Response and Military Communication
Indian forces have responded effectively, ensuring no collateral damage on their side. The government has increased security measures and civilian advisories have been issued to stay in safe shelters across border villages.
On April 29, a hotline conversation was held between Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO) of both countries. India issued a strong warning to Pakistan regarding the ceasefire violations and emphasized adherence to the February 2021 ceasefire agreement.
Strategic Implications and Civilian Safety
The continued provocations come at a time of heightened military alertness across J&K. With repeated violations spanning Kupwara to Baramulla and Poonch to Akhnoor, the Indian Army remains on high alert to prevent infiltration attempts and ensure border security.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Defence Ministry are closely monitoring the situation. Local authorities have increased patrolling and surveillance, especially in the Pir Panjal and LoC-adjacent regions, to deter any misadventures from across the border.
