The chaos wreaked havoc on the streets, with fearless rioters vandalizing police vehicles and setting fires in several places. Buses were torched, and a police car was overturned. In light of the severe situation, the police have appealed to citizens to stay indoors. A significant police force has been deployed throughout Harehills, and so far, no casualties have been reported.
According to The Guardian, the unrest began on Luxor Street in Harehills after some children were taken away by a government childcare agency. Protesters opposed the agency’s action of separating children from their parents and placing them in childcare homes. Videos of the riots are circulating on social media, showing masked rioters in Harehills.
Sky News reported that the riots were triggered by the childcare agency taking local children. A restaurant owner mentioned that people protested against the removal of local children. The disturbance started on Luxor Road. West Yorkshire Police stated that a double-decker bus was set on fire, and a police vehicle was overturned, disrupting the public transportation system. They assured that those responsible for this situation would be held accountable by the law.
The police described the disorder as caused by a small criminal minority. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed shock at the scenes of unrest. Councillor Salma Arif urged people to stay home. West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin thanked emergency service officials for handling the riots. Local MP Richard Burgon announced that he was returning to Leeds from Parliament and was in contact with the police and residents. A spokesperson for First Bus Leeds mentioned that two of their vehicles were caught in the chaos, but both drivers were safe, and no passengers were reported injured. One of their empty buses was set on fire.
