Kalyan, May 2: A massive fire erupted at the Barave dumping ground in Kalyan West, Maharashtra, on Friday, causing widespread panic in the area. The blaze spread rapidly, filling the sky with thick smoke and making it difficult for nearby residents to breathe.
Witnesses reported that black smoke billowed from the garbage heaps, prompting people to shut their doors and windows. Many experienced discomfort and irritation in their eyes due to the smoke.
Upon receiving the alert, multiple fire engines from the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation rushed to the scene. Firefighters quickly took charge and began efforts to extinguish the flames. They faced significant challenges due to the intense heat and the presence of dry waste at the dumping ground, which hampered their operations.
Preliminary reports suggest that the fire intensified rapidly due to the extreme heat and the dry waste present. Officials indicated that it may take additional time to fully extinguish the fire.
This incident is not the first of its kind at this dumping ground; a similar severe fire had occurred recently at the Umbarde dumping ground in Aadharwadi. The recurring nature of these incidents has raised concerns among local residents and cast doubts on administrative preparedness.
Currently, fire department teams remain on-site, working diligently to bring the situation under control. The exact cause of the fire is still unclear.
