New Delhi, May 1: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed DTC officials to deploy water attendants at 23 major bus terminals to provide free drinking water to passengers and staff as part of the Heatwave Action Plan.
During a meeting with Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, Gupta emphasized the need for special measures to ensure the health and comfort of passengers during the heatwave.
An official stated that DTC will provide glasses and pouches of 200 ML water packets in around 3,000 running buses. Additionally, water dispensers will be installed at select terminals to keep passengers and staff hydrated.
The ‘Water Attendant’ initiative by DTC aims to offer immediate relief to the public, especially daily commuters who are most affected by the extreme heat. This initiative, first launched last year under the direction of the Transport Minister, received an overwhelmingly positive response from the public.
An official statement noted that this proactive intervention has significantly alleviated the challenges faced by citizens during the peak summer season, reinforcing the government’s commitment to accountable and citizen-centric governance.
Building on this success, the initiative has been further strengthened this year to expand its reach and impact. Singh mentioned that arrangements have been made to ensure free drinking water is available on nearly 3,000 DTC buses operating throughout the city.
The statement highlighted that this step will greatly enhance the availability of water for passengers throughout their journeys. DTC has also urged all passengers to remain vigilant during the heatwave, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during the afternoon.
While reviewing the heatwave action plan, the Chief Minister previously instructed all hospitals to ensure adequate bed capacity for heat-related cases and to equip every ambulance with necessary facilities to handle heat-related emergencies.
The statement further revealed that over 339 health centers across Delhi have been stocked with ORS, ice packs, and other essential supplies, while more than 30 hospitals have established special ‘cool rooms’ for treating heat-related illnesses. Additionally, 174 medical officers and ASHA workers have been trained to address heat-related diseases, and 330 ambulances have been kept on standby for emergency response.
Gupta also called for a comprehensive awareness campaign throughout the city to educate residents about preventive measures. Schools have been instructed to implement a ‘Water Bell’ system to encourage students to drink water at regular intervals and prevent dehydration.
