BYD Surpasses Tesla as World’s Largest EV Maker, Registers Over $100 Billion Revenue with Advanced Technology Push

BYD, the Chinese auto giant known for its innovative electric and hybrid vehicles, has officially overtaken Tesla to become the largest electric vehicle (EV) maker in the world by revenue. According to the latest financial reports, BYD generated over $107 billion in revenue in 2024, surpassing Tesla’s $97.7 billion, highlighting a rapid and impressive ascent in the fiercely competitive global electric vehicle market.

BYD overtakes Tesla

BYD’s Remarkable Growth Surpasses Tesla’s Revenue

BYD’s revenue surged to 777 billion yuan (approximately $107 billion) in 2024, marking an impressive 29% growth over 2023. In comparison, Tesla, helmed by Elon Musk, reported revenue of around $97.7 billion—roughly $11 billion less than BYD. Additionally, BYD posted a substantial net income increase of 34% year-on-year, reaching 40.3 billion yuan, exceeding analysts’ expectations.

The significant rise in BYD’s fortunes is largely attributed to its extensive lineup of both electric and hybrid vehicles, powered by advanced technology, innovative battery solutions, and sophisticated driver-assistance features, all of which have resonated strongly with global consumers.

Fast-paced Global Expansion and Technological Innovation

BYD’s ascendancy in the global EV market is not limited to its home base in China. The automaker has rapidly expanded into crucial international markets, particularly in Europe, a key region for electric vehicles. BYD’s comprehensive strategy involves ramping up its annual vehicle production capacity, which exceeded 1 million units in 2024, and aggressively expanding its global sales network.

In a significant technological leap, BYD recently unveiled a new vehicle architecture capable of adding up to 400 kilometers of range with just a five-minute charge. This innovative platform is expected to underpin multiple future BYD models. Furthermore, even BYD’s entry-level models now feature advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), emphasizing the company’s commitment to equipping vehicles with premium technologies.

The Chinese automaker has also committed to developing more than 4,000 EV charging stations across China, a move aimed at bolstering infrastructure to support its expanding electric vehicle fleet.

Hybrid Advantage: BYD’s Edge over Tesla

Unlike Tesla, which exclusively manufactures electric vehicles, BYD offers consumers both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Hybrid cars continue to appeal to a broader global audience, especially buyers hesitant to fully transition to electric due to concerns about charging infrastructure and driving range.

In 2024, BYD sold approximately 1.76 million electric vehicles, nearly matching Tesla’s 1.79 million units. However, factoring in hybrid sales, BYD delivered an impressive 4.27 million vehicles, placing its total sales on par with automotive giants like Ford. For 2025, BYD anticipates further growth, targeting vehicle sales between 5 million and 6 million units.

Early signs of robust demand are already visible, with BYD reporting a remarkable 93% growth in vehicle sales in the first two months of 2025 alone, reaching 623,300 units.
