Bashir Shows the World What He Can Do: Ben Stokes

Trent Bridge, July 22 (Udaipur Kiran) – Ben Stokes praised 20-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who led England to a series win against the West Indies at Trent Bridge on Sunday. Bashir took 5 wickets for 41 runs in 11.1 overs in the second innings, becoming the youngest English bowler to take five wickets in a home Test and the first spinner since 2006 to achieve this feat in Nottingham.

England defeated the West Indies by 241 runs in this match. After the match, Stokes lauded Bashir, saying, “He has a lot of talent and an incredible desire to improve. His intent is always to take wickets. It’s really great for a young player to perform like this and help England win a Test match. He was quite emotional at the end. It was a very good day for him. He has shown the world what he can do.”

Bashir’s relatively obscure rise has been well-documented. He was selected for the India tour earlier this year when England captain Stokes saw him bowling in a video of Alastair Cook on X (formerly Twitter). Despite not being a regular for Somerset, the young off-spinner’s 2.35-meter release point and control over length were deemed crucial for the challenging subcontinent tour.

Bashir justified his selection by taking 17 wickets in three Test matches in India, with five-wicket hauls in Ranchi and Dharamshala. Interestingly, Bashir was loaned out by Somerset to Worcestershire at the start of this County Championship season, with Jack Leach preferred as the primary spinner. However, Stokes, Brendon McCullum, and Rob Key opted to replace the incumbent spinner Leach and selected Bashir for this West Indies series.

After Bashir’s efforts at Trent Bridge, where he did not bowl at Lord’s, Stokes said, “Any decisions we make are not only based on how far we can take talent but also if we think they are good enough for international cricket. Bashir showed what he can do in favorable conditions in India, but this week’s pitch wasn’t very spin-friendly, and he took seven wickets in the match. His ability to change his pace, alter his line, and control how the ball reacts off the surface was top-notch.”

Stokes also praised Mark Wood, who took only two wickets in 28 overs in the Test. However, the England captain did not confirm whether the fast bowler would be rested for the final match of the series.

“On another day, Woody could have been the Man of the Match. The way he bowled was amazing. He didn’t get the rewards in this game, but someone will eventually benefit this summer. We talk a lot about partnerships in batting, and it’s the same with bowling. Look at the number of wickets at the other end when Woody is bowling his spells, that’s the kind of impact a bowler like Woody can have,” Stokes said.

“He has the heart of a lion, his pace is incredible, but he also has the skill to consistently hit a certain area.”

The third Test of the series will begin on July 26 at Edgbaston.
