Maharana Vishvaraj Singh Objects to ‘Shoorveer’ Song Depiction in Mirzapur

Udaipur, September 14: Maharana Vishvaraj Singh Mewar has objected to the depiction of the song ‘Shoorveer’, dedicated to Maharana Pratap, in the film ‘Mirzapur’. He has written to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeking immediate action in the matter.

Maharana Vishvaraj Singh

In his letter, Maharana Vishvaraj Singh said the song ‘Shoorveer’, written as a tribute to Maharana Pratap, has been used in the film to depict gangsters. He also referred to discussions about the issue in news media and on social media over the past few days.

He said this was not the first time that the Hindi film industry had presented or referred to respected historical figures in an objectionable manner. According to him, artistic freedom cannot be used to justify objectionable portrayals of historical personalities.

Maharana Vishvaraj Singh also expressed concern over the use of Maharana Pratap’s name and legacy. He said his name has been used by several people without any restriction and that the rights of his direct descendants should also be taken into consideration.

He referred to various efforts and expenditure by the government in honour of Maharana Pratap and said government action in such matters should be consistent with its public position.

Six Demands Before the Government

Maharana Vishvaraj Singh has urged the Union Minister to take six major steps in the matter.

He demanded that permission to use the ‘Shoorveer’ song in this manner be withdrawn. He also sought appropriate action against the members of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) responsible for approving the depiction.

He further urged the government to amend the rules, if necessary, to prevent similar objectionable portrayals of historical personalities in the future.

He also sought immediate action so that the controversy does not result in any further inappropriate or free publicity for the film.

Maharana Vishvaraj Singh also demanded action against the filmmakers, stating that appropriate steps should be taken over the disrespectful depiction of a personality held in the highest regard by the nation.

In his sixth demand, he sought protection of the rights of descendants of respected historical personalities concerning the commercial or other use of their family names and legacy for benefit.

A copy of the letter has also been sent to the CBFC Chairman.

Maharana Vishvaraj Singh made it clear in the letter that the government should act promptly in the matter and establish appropriate safeguards for the future in cases concerning the dignity and respect of historical personalities.
