Kolkata, September 8 (Udaipur Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a significant step towards preserving the legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika by reaching out to West Bengal‘s Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. In a letter, Sarma requested assistance in acquiring and safeguarding Hazarika’s historic residence located in Tollygunge, Kolkata.
Sarma highlighted the importance of Kolkata in Hazarika’s life, noting that many of his memorable songs were created in the very house that the Assam government aims to protect. He expressed a deep desire to preserve this heritage for future generations.
In his communication, Sarma emphasized the cultural and historical significance of this property, located at 77B Golf Club Road, Tollygunge, where Hazarika spent a substantial part of his creative life. He mentioned the emotional connection the people of Assam have with this property, reinforcing the state’s interest in acquiring it as a heritage site.
The Chief Minister also referred to the ongoing celebrations marking Hazarika’s birth centenary, urging Adhikari to consider intervening personally in this matter to facilitate the acquisition process. Sarma’s appeal underscores the cultural ties between Assam and West Bengal, as well as Hazarika’s immense contributions to the nation’s artistic landscape.
