Moscow, September 8 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Kremlin has expressed strong support for India’s presidency of BRICS, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Russia is confident the upcoming summit in New Delhi will be successful. During a virtual briefing organized by Sputnik India, Peskov highlighted BRICS as a group of nations sharing common goals aimed at advancing global cooperation.
Peskov referred to the summit as a significant milestone in India’s leadership, emphasizing Russia’s active role in all BRICS initiatives. He remarked, “We appreciate the outcomes of India’s presidency, and we have no doubt that this summit will be a success.”
He noted the historical context of BRICS, which began nearly 20 years ago as the RIC (Russia-India-China) grouping, later evolving into BRIC with Brazil’s inclusion and ultimately becoming BRICS with South Africa’s entry. Peskov clarified that BRICS is not a formal organization, lacking a charter or permanent office, but consists of countries united by a shared vision for global development and cooperation.
Russia aims to enhance cooperation across three main pillars: policy and security, economy and finance, and cultural and humanitarian exchanges. Peskov also expressed support for the inclusion of new countries in BRICS, mentioning that nations such as Belarus, Bolivia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan have been granted “partner state” status since 2024.
He refuted claims that BRICS is antagonistic towards Western nations, stating, “We agree with India that BRICS is not against any Western country. It is for member states and those who share its ideology. It is not against any third party, which is its unique feature.”
India is set to host the 18th BRICS summit on September 12 and 13, where leaders from member and partner countries will convene. The theme of India’s presidency is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s human-centric approach.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit will focus on strengthening cooperation within BRICS, discussing shared priorities, and exchanging views on global and regional issues. During its presidency, India has organized over 350 meetings and high-level events to bolster strategic partnerships in political, security, economic, and cultural spheres.
