Kolkata, September 5 (Udaipur Kiran) : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Saturday a commitment to transform the state’s education system in line with the vision of Swami Vivekananda. Speaking at the ‘Vidya Sagar Education Awards 2026’ ceremony, he emphasized a shift from an exam-centric approach to one that focuses on character development, mental strength, and self-reliance.
Adhikari noted that in recent years, the teachings of Swami Vivekananda have gradually been removed from the education framework, weakening its core values. He highlighted that true education instills self-belief and empowers individuals to stand on their own feet, while also stressing the importance of physical health alongside academic excellence.
The Chief Minister criticized the previous Trinamool Congress government, led by Mamata Banerjee, for dismantling the National Cadet Corps (NCC), which he described as a vital organization for promoting physical fitness, discipline, and nationalism among students. He pointed out that instead of the NCC, the previous administration had introduced the ‘Jai Hind Vahini’, a move he deemed a significant error.
Adhikari also addressed the issue of widespread corruption in the recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff in state-run schools under the previous government. He assured that the recruitment process would now be completely transparent, with appointments based solely on merit.
Furthermore, he cautioned students against being misled by anti-national elements attempting to brainwash them. He remarked that these groups remain silent when terrorists attack Indian tourists, yet protest against military operations. He urged students to remain vigilant against such anti-national forces.
