A groundbreaking discovery from Yunnan province in southwestern China is rewriting the genetic history of East and Southeast Asia. A 7,100-year-old skeleton of a Neolithic woman, unearthed at the Xingyi archaeological site, has revealed traces of a previously unknown and deeply divergent human lineage, long theorized but never confirmed—until now.

Named Xingyi_EN, the ancient woman lived around 7,100 years ago, according to radiocarbon dating. Isotope analysis suggests she led a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. But it’s her DNA that has stunned scientists. The genetic data shows she belonged to a population that diverged from other modern human groups more than 40,000 years ago, a lineage researchers have now labeled the Basal Asian Xingyi lineage.
This lineage—unrelated to Neanderthals or Denisovans—had remained genetically isolated for thousands of years. Remarkably, researchers believe this “ghost” lineage later contributed to the genetic ancestry of modern Tibetans, marking Xingyi_EN as the first physical evidence of this enigmatic human population.
A Genetic Bridge to the Tibetan Plateau
The study, published in the journal Science, analyzed the genomes of 127 ancient individuals from sites across southwestern China, ranging from 1,400 to 7,150 years old. The research offers key insights into the ancestral roots of Tibetan populations, previously thought to derive mainly from northern East Asian lineages.
Xingyi_EN’s unique genome fills a critical gap in understanding how ancient populations adapted to extreme environments like the Tibetan Plateau. It also suggests that ancient populations in Central Yunnan, potentially Austroasiatic-speaking, played a larger role in shaping the region’s demographic history than previously believed.
Yunnan: A Genetic Goldmine
Modern-day Yunnan is known for having China’s highest ethnic and linguistic diversity. The study now positions the region as a genetic reservoir rich in ancient human diversity, possibly crucial to solving long-standing questions about the peopling of East and Southeast Asia.
“Ancient humans that lived in this region may be key to addressing several remaining questions on the prehistoric populations of East and Southeast Asia,” the researchers wrote. These include clarifying the migration routes of early Homo sapiens and understanding how certain genetic traits—like those found in Tibetans for high-altitude adaptation—came to be.
As genome sequencing continues to refine our knowledge of human history, discoveries like Xingyi_EN show that the past still holds secrets that can transform our understanding of who we are and where we come from.
