Kolkata, June 18: In a significant move aimed at modernizing the operations of the West Bengal Police, the state government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Defence University, which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, on Wednesday.
The agreement was formalized in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the state secretariat, Nabanna.
With this MoU, West Bengal joins the ranks of states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Assam, which have previously entered into similar agreements with the National Defence University.
During the event, Chief Minister Adhikari emphasized that while the efficiency of the state police was once at its peak and aligned with international standards, the previous government led by Mamata Banerjee failed to utilize this capacity for public benefit.
He noted that essential modern equipment to enhance police efficiency was not provided earlier, and a shortage of personnel hindered the police from meeting public expectations.
Adhikari stated, “We are working to bring transparency in recruitment and arrange for the hiring of more police personnel.”
Under this agreement, police officers at all levels in the state will receive training. The Chief Minister highlighted that the training will focus on modern crimes such as cybercrime, the dark web, the use of artificial intelligence, and human trafficking. Additionally, capabilities in forensic science and border intelligence will be strengthened.
He reiterated that the primary objective is to modernize the state police force so that they do not have to rely on the Central Armed Police Forces for serious law and order issues.
Since taking office, the Chief Minister has stressed the importance of the state police functioning impartially and establishing the “rule of law” rather than a “rule of the ruler.”
