Tamluk, Mar 4 : At least two people were killed and seven sustained severe injuries when a sand-laden truck hit a three-wheeler auto and then rammed a passenger packed bus in West Bengal’s East Medinipur on Friday, the district police said. Local people also torched police patrolling van after the accident. Furious over the death of the two people, including the auto driver, the local people also torched the police vehicle, which was chasing the truck, the eyewitnesses said. The deceased include the auto driver. The injured were rushed to the Contain Mohokuma hospital. The accident happened at Marisda on the 116-B National Highway around 7 am. Eyewitnesses told the investigating police that the truck, which was heading to Mecheda from Contain, was being followed by a patrol police van, hit the auto, which was coming from the opposite direction, and then slammed the bus. The seven injured people were on the bus. The truck driver fled. Locals angry over the death also vandalized the police van and set it ablaze, blocking the busy highway. The reinforcement then arrived and cleared the highway by removing the damaged vehicles. A separate road accident also killed a cyclist when a truck ran over him at Puyababagan in Bankura. PC RN
