BJP Calls for Bandh in Jamshedpur Over Himanshu Murder Case

Ranchi, July 1: The political atmosphere in Jharkhand has intensified following the murder of a young man named Himanshu Singh outside the Double Down Pub and Bar in Bistupur, Jamshedpur, in the presence of police. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has held police officials and personnel responsible for the incident, demanding the registration of a murder case against them, a fast-track trial for all accused, and the release of a white paper on the state’s law and order situation.

The party has also called for a bandh in Jamshedpur on July 3. A torch rally is scheduled to take place in the city on the evening of July 2. BJP’s state president, Aditya Sahu, stated during a press conference at the party’s state office in Ranchi that the incident is not just a murder but a direct attack on the rule of law. He alleged that criminals in Jharkhand have become so emboldened that they commit acts of violence even in the presence of police.

It is reported that on the night of June 27, Himanshu Singh and his friends were attacked after they protested against alleged harassment by some youths at the Double Down Pub. In a bid to save himself, Himanshu took refuge in a police PCR van, but the attackers pulled him out in front of the police and assaulted him with sharp weapons. Himanshu succumbed to his injuries on June 29 during treatment. Following this incident, widespread protests erupted in the city, raising serious questions about the police’s role.

Sahu emphasized that if an individual seeks refuge in a police vehicle to save their life and is dragged out and killed by criminals while the police remain passive, it represents a significant failure of law and order. The BJP has demanded that charges under the Indian Penal Code related to murder be filed against the police officials and personnel present at the time of the incident.

Aditya Sahu also called for the immediate arrest of all accused, a fast-track hearing in court, appropriate compensation and government assistance for the victim’s family, and a special campaign against organized crime, extortion, illegal arms, and criminal gangs in the state. He criticized the state government for removing two police superintendents under public pressure but failing to appoint replacements for an extended period, raising questions about the government’s intentions.

He claimed that incidents of murder, kidnapping, rape, and theft have been on the rise in Jharkhand, leading to a complete breakdown of law and order. The BJP has warned that if the government does not take effective measures to control crime immediately, the party will intensify its movement across Jharkhand and may call for a statewide bandh if necessary.
