Chennai, November 4 (Udaipur Kiran): The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai on Tuesday predicted moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Although the northeast monsoon has officially set in, its full impact is yet to be felt due to weak easterly and westerly wind patterns.
According to 24-hour rainfall data recorded till Monday morning, Ranipet district’s Malai, Tiruvannamalai district’s Sethupattu, and Villupuram district’s Valathi received 3 cm of rainfall each.
A low-pressure area has formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Myanmar coast, and is expected to move towards the Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts within the next 24 hours.
The RMC bulletin stated that on Tuesday and Wednesday, parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to experience moderate rain with thunder and lightning. Light rainfall is expected to continue intermittently until November 11.
The forecast also indicated that maximum temperatures in some districts could rise up to 4°C above normal. In Chennai and nearby suburbs, the sky is likely to remain partly cloudy with chances of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder later in the day. Limited moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal is expected to keep daytime conditions relatively warm.
Despite the official onset of the northeast monsoon, meteorologists noted that while the westerly winds remain active, the easterly flow has not yet strengthened, resulting in scattered and delayed rainfall across several regions.
However, afternoon heat is triggering convective showers during the evening and night. Experts expect this pattern to continue until around November 12, after which stronger easterly winds may help the northeast monsoon gain momentum across Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, a tropical storm named Kalmaegi has formed over the South China Sea near the Philippines and is moving towards Thailand. Officials clarified that this system is unlikely to have any significant impact on the northeast monsoon over Tamil Nadu.
