Parvati’s Penance Wins Lord Shiva, Indra’s Throne Begins to Shake

Udaipur, August 23: The ongoing ‘Apnon Se Apni Baat—Bholenath Ke Saath’ Shiva Katha at Narayan Seva Sansthan in Udaipur witnessed the narration of Goddess Parvati’s hard penance and her marriage to Lord Shiva on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering, Sansthan president Prashant Agrawal said Goddess Parvati gave up royal comforts and undertook hard penance with the wish of having Lord Shiva as her husband. Initially, she survived on roots and fruits and later gave up even leaves. Because of this, she came to be known as ‘Aparna’.

He said Parvati’s penance had such a powerful effect that even nature seemed to bow before her devotion. Wild animals gave up their enmity, the heat of the sun became milder and even the flow of rivers appeared to slow down.

Agrawal said the effect of her penance was felt across the three worlds and even the throne of Lord Indra began to shake. Worried gods approached Lord Brahma, who told them that the woman doing the penance was Goddess Parvati herself and that her marriage with Lord Shiva would help solve their biggest concern—the growing terror of Tarakasura.

He said the Saptarishis later tested Parvati’s determination. Lord Shiva himself also appeared in the form of an old man to test her devotion. However, Parvati did not move away from her decision and remained firm in her devotion to Shiva.

Finally, her hard penance, strong faith and determination were successful and the divine marriage of Shiva and Shakti took place. The story of Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya was also narrated, followed by the story of Tarakasura’s defeat.

Hundreds of devotees, including persons with disabilities associated with Narayan Seva Sansthan, attended the katha. The atmosphere remained filled with devotion as the devotees listened to the stories of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
