New Delhi, January 8, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for several states in North India, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and a rise in cold conditions over the next few days. The Western Disturbance is set to impact weather patterns across the region, particularly from January 10 to 12, 2025, bringing significant changes in temperature and visibility.

Rain and Storm Alert: Affected Areas
As per the IMD’s forecast, rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit several northern states, including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand. The weather will worsen on January 11, 2025, with the possibility of heavy showers and gusty winds. Uttarakhand will experience rainfall on both January 11 and 12, while Rajasthan will be affected on January 11.
In addition to these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala are forecasted to see heavy rainfall from January 11 to 12, 2025, further impacting daily life and travel.
Impact of the Western Disturbance
The Western Disturbance has already caused changes in the weather, with northeastern India experiencing light to moderate rainfall on January 8, especially in Assam and surrounding regions. The Western Disturbance will influence the weather from January 10 to 12, causing rainfall in the western Himalayan region and impacting North India. The IMD has predicted a continued shift in weather, with Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab bracing for possible thunderstorms, particularly on January 11.
Cold Wave and Fog Across North India
Along with the rain, North India is also preparing for an intensification of cold conditions. The minimum temperatures in areas such as Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have been recorded below 0°C, with regions like Himachal Pradesh seeing temperatures ranging between 1°C to 3°C. The IMD expects the cold wave to affect the region further, with temperature drops of up to 2°C expected over the next 24 hours in North-West India.
Additionally, dense fog continues to envelop several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, making travel hazardous in the mornings. The fog is expected to persist until January 10, affecting air and rail traffic in the region.
In Madhya Pradesh, Rajgarh recorded the lowest temperature in the plains at 1.6°C, highlighting the severity of the ongoing cold spell.
Weather in Other Regions
In Central India, Maharashtra is expected to see a rise in temperatures by 2 to 4°C over the next three days. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in South India will remain around 10 to 15°C, with heavy rainfall forecasted in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala.

- Cold Day Conditions: The IMD has also issued an alert for severe cold day conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh, especially on January 8 and 9. Dense fog will continue to affect Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh until January 10.
- Rain and Thunderstorms: Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected on January 11 in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Uttarakhand will see showers and storms on January 11 and 12.
- Heavy Rain in the South: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala will witness heavy rainfall on January 11 and 12.
