Mumbai, August 16: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the reconduct of the UGC-NET June 2026 examination papers for English, Commerce, and Sociology. This decision comes after several serious errors were identified in these papers, including factual inaccuracies, typing mistakes, translation issues, and language-related errors.
In a public notice released on Sunday, the NTA stated that the UGC-NET June 2026 examination was conducted from June 22 to June 30 across 87 subjects. This examination is crucial for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), eligibility for Assistant Professors, and admissions to PhD programs.
The NTA received multiple complaints regarding the papers for English, Commerce, and Sociology, prompting the formation of a committee to investigate these issues. The committee discovered various errors, including incorrect spellings of prominent scholars’ names, discrepancies in book titles, language errors in questions, grammatical mistakes, gender and number agreement issues, punctuation errors, and the use of non-standard terms for established concepts.
Additionally, it was noted that a significant number of questions had been repeated from previous examinations. To ensure a fair and error-free examination process, the committee recommended that the tests for these three subjects be reconducted.
The NTA emphasized that papers with such levels of errors do not meet the standards for a fair and error-free examination. Simply removing a few questions after the challenge process would not adequately address these issues.
According to the NTA, the re-examinations for the three subjects are scheduled as follows: English on September 9, 2026, Shift-1 from 9 AM to 12 PM; Commerce on September 9, 2026, Shift-2 from 3 PM to 6 PM; and Sociology on September 10, 2026, Shift-1 from 9 AM to 12 PM.
The NTA clarified that no additional examination fee will be charged to candidates for the re-examination of these three subjects. Detailed information regarding the examination cities, centers, and admit cards will be released later on the NTA’s official website.
Furthermore, the NTA confirmed that the results for the 84 subjects for which the answer key challenge process is currently ongoing will be declared as scheduled. The re-examination for English, Commerce, and Sociology will not delay the allocation of JRF seats or the issuance of e-certificates for eligibility in Assistant Professor and PhD admissions for these 84 subjects.
The NTA stated that the number of candidates declared eligible for Assistant Professors will be equal to 6% of the candidates who appeared in the June 2026 examination or the re-examination, whichever number is higher. The allocation of subject-wise seats/eligibility for JRF, Assistant Professors, and PhD admissions will be done as per the provisions mentioned in the information bulletin. The NTA assured that the previously allocated numbers will not be reduced under any circumstances after the re-examination.
