Melbourne, December 29 (Udaipur Kiran) – Experienced fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will be included in Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 despite injury concerns.
Australia will begin their T20 World Cup campaign on February 11 against Ireland, following a three-match T20 series in Pakistan scheduled for January.
Head coach Andrew McDonald revealed that Pat Cummins will undergo another scan in four weeks, after which a final decision on his availability for the World Cup will be made. The tournament is set to start on February 7.
McDonald said, “I think Pat Cummins will have another scan in four weeks, which will give us clarity on his status for the World Cup. He will be included in the 15-member squad, and then we will know where he stands.”
Cummins had suffered a stress injury to his back in July and has played only one international match since then.
Meanwhile, Cummins rehabilitated his back injury and made a comeback during the third Ashes Test against England in Adelaide, where he took six wickets and helped Australia secure an 82-run victory. Australia did not want to take further risks and rested him for the remaining matches of the series.
Josh Hazlewood missed the entire Ashes series due to hamstring and Achilles injuries but is expected to recover soon.
McDonald added, “Josh is returning to bowling and looks likely to be fit within the expected timeframe.”
Another concern for Australia is Tim David, the explosive batsman who was injured while playing for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL). Due to a hamstring injury, he was sidelined for two months earlier this year. However, McDonald is confident that the 29-year-old will recover in time for the major 20-over tournament.
