Mexico City, December 29 (Udaipur Kiran) – A passenger train carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members derailed near a bridge close to Nizanda in southern Mexico. The Navy Secretariat confirmed on social media that the accident on Sunday resulted in at least 13 deaths and 98 injuries.
The incident involved the Interoceanic train. The coaches derailed at a curve near the city of Nizanda in Oaxaca. The train consisted of two locomotives and four passenger carriages. It connects the Pacific port of Salina Cruz to the Gulf Coast at Coatzacoalcos.
Among the 98 injured, five are said to be in serious condition. Most passengers were admitted to hospitals of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz. Other injured passengers received treatment at IMSS Well-being hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo posted on the social media platform X, “The Navy Secretariat has informed me that 13 people have unfortunately died and 98 are injured in the Interoceanic train accident, with five in serious condition.”
She added, “I have instructed the Navy Secretary and the Deputy Secretary for Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior to visit the site and personally meet the families. I appreciate the support of the Governor of Oaxaca and his team. We will continue to provide updates.”
Rescue teams helped passengers disembark from the derailed train. Local and federal officials are cooperating to provide relief and medical assistance. Governor Salomon Jara Cruz expressed deep regret over the accident and assured full cooperation with federal teams to assist the affected families.
The Attorney General of Mexico has launched an investigation into the causes of the derailment. The Interoceanic rail link was designed to strengthen regional connectivity, boost passenger and freight transport, and create a strategic trade corridor in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
It was inaugurated two years ago by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Officials are closely monitoring the situation. Immediate medical care is being provided to the injured while ensuring the safety of all passengers.
