In a groundbreaking revelation, NASA has identified a “fracture” in one of the Milky Way’s most intriguing structures — a massive filament near the galaxy’s center that researchers have nicknamed a “cosmic bone.” Captured using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the fracture offers rare insights into the dynamic and often violent environment of the Galactic Center.
What Is the “Cosmic Bone”?
Despite the moniker, the Milky Way contains no real bones. The term “cosmic bone” refers to a Galactic Center Filament (GCF) — enormous, thread-like structures composed of radio-emitting particles interwoven with strong magnetic fields. These filaments are found near the galaxy’s nucleus and span vast distances.
The fractured filament in question is one of the brightest and longest of its kind ever observed, stretching nearly 230 light-years in length and located 26,000 light-years from Earth. It has been designated G359.13142-0.20005.
Cause of the Fracture: A High-Speed Pulsar
NASA scientists, in collaboration with data from the MeerKAT Radio Array in South Africa and the National Science Foundation’s Very Large Array in New Mexico, concluded that the fracture was likely caused by a pulsar — a dense, rapidly spinning neutron star that emits powerful radiation beams.
The suspected pulsar appears to have collided with the filament at speeds between 1 to 2 million miles per hour, disrupting the structure’s magnetic field and leading to what researchers describe as a “fracture” in the filament.
A First-of-Its-Kind X-ray Glimpse
This discovery represents one of the most detailed X-ray scans of a Galactic Center Filament. The Chandra X-ray image revealed the fractured region in unprecedented clarity, enhancing our understanding of the complex magnetic and energetic dynamics within the Milky Way.
