Rome, May 13 – World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continued his remarkable return from a doping ban by advancing to the Round of 16 at the Italian Open 2025. Playing in front of an electrified home crowd at the Foro Italico in Rome, Sinner defeated Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong 6-4, 6-2 on Monday in his second consecutive straight-sets win.

Early Setback, Strong Comeback
Despite taking an early 4-1 lead in the first set, Sinner briefly stumbled due to a series of misjudged drop shots and a double fault, allowing de Jong to level the score at 4-4. But the Italian regained control with powerful groundstrokes and sharp serves to seal the first set and dominate the second.
This victory extends Sinner’s unbeaten streak to 23 matches — a run that began in October 2024 — and marks his first tournament appearance since winning the Australian Open earlier this year.
Return Amid Doping Ban Controversy
Sinner’s comeback has been under scrutiny following a three-month doping suspension issued in February under a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Critics questioned the timing of the ban, which allowed the Italian star to avoid missing any Grand Slam events.
Nevertheless, fans have rallied behind the 22-year-old. “Vai Jannik!” chants echoed across the stadium throughout the match, echoing their strong support. He will now face 17th-seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina, who recently reached the Madrid Open semifinals.
Sportsmanship on Display
During the second set, Jesper de Jong suffered a fall while attempting a passing shot and appeared to injure his wrist. Sinner quickly crossed the net to check on his opponent, offering assistance and calling for medical help — a gesture applauded by both fans and commentators for its sportsmanship.
