(Udaipur Kiran): Microsoft has rushed out an emergency fix for Windows 11 after a recent security update left many users unable to use their keyboards and mice — effectively locking them out of their PCs.

The problem originated from the October 2025 security update (KB5066835), which disabled USB keyboard and mouse support inside the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) — a critical component used during system repairs, malware cleanup, and startup troubleshooting.
Users across Reddit and Microsoft’s support forums reported being stuck on recovery screens, unable to select options or type commands. Some even resorted to connecting old PS/2 keyboards or trying Bluetooth devices to regain control.
Microsoft acknowledged the bug, stating:
“After installing the Windows security update released on October 14, 2025 (KB5066835), USB devices, such as keyboards and mice, do not function in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This issue prevents navigation of any of the recovery options within WinRE.”
To resolve the issue, Microsoft has released an out-of-band emergency patch (KB5070773) through Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog. The patch restores USB functionality within WinRE for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and Windows Server 2025.
Experts recommend users apply the new patch immediately and ensure both their system and recovery partitions are updated to prevent similar lockouts.
With KB5070773 now available, affected Windows 11 users can finally boot and interact with their PCs normally — a much-needed relief after days of system chaos.
