Kolkata, 15 November (Udaipur Kiran). A major fire broke out on Saturday morning at the Burrabazar market in Kolkata. The blaze started at an electrical goods shop on Ezra Street and quickly spread to nearby buildings, shops and warehouses, causing panic across the busy commercial area.
According to the fire department, the alert was received around 5 am. Initially, six fire tenders were rushed to the spot, but as the flames intensified, the number was increased to 21. Firefighters are continuously working to control the blaze, but dense population and highly combustible materials in the area are making the operation difficult.
Thick clouds of smoke have covered the entire locality. As a safety measure, power supply in the surrounding areas has been disconnected. Local traders fear heavy financial losses as several shops have been completely gutted.
The DC Central of Kolkata Police also visited the site and reviewed the situation with fire officials.
Fire Minister Sujit Bose said preliminary investigation suggests the fire may have been caused by a short circuit. A joint team of police and the fire department will investigate the exact cause.
