Markets Open Higher on Global Cues, Pharma Leads Gains

Mumbai, April 27 (Udaipur Kiran): Indian equity markets opened on a positive note on Monday, supported by strong global cues, with buying seen in pharma and realty stocks.

At 9:19 am, the BSE Sensex was up 363 points or 0.47 percent at 77,027, while the Nifty 50 gained 106 points or 0.45 percent to trade at 24,004.

In early trade, the rally was led by pharma and healthcare stocks. Sectoral indices such as Nifty Realty and Nifty Pharma emerged as top gainers. Other indices including Nifty Healthcare, Nifty Metal, Nifty IT, Nifty India Defense, and Nifty Commodities were also trading in the green.

Broader markets also showed strong momentum, with midcap and smallcap stocks witnessing gains. The Nifty Midcap 100 index rose 794 points or 1.34 percent to 60,169, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index advanced 240 points or 1.37 percent to 17,807.

Among Sensex constituents, major gainers included Sun Pharma, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Tech Mahindra, NTPC, ITC, Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki, Titan Company, State Bank of India, Power Grid Corporation, Bajaj Finserv, Bharti Airtel, and InterGlobe Aviation.

On the other hand, Axis Bank, Bharat Electronics Limited, and Bajaj Finance were among the laggards.

Most Asian markets traded higher, including Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Seoul, and Jakarta. In the US, markets ended mixed on Friday, with the Dow Jones closing 0.16 percent lower while the Nasdaq gained 1.63 percent.

Market sentiment was also supported by reports of a fresh peace proposal from Iran to the United States, aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing tensions.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 8,827.87 crore on Friday. Meanwhile, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) invested Rs 4,700.71 crore in equities.
