Kokrajhar (Assam), October 25 (Udaipur Kiran): A Maoist accused of orchestrating the recent IED explosion on a railway track in Assam’s Kokrajhar district was killed in a police encounter on Friday morning. Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Pushpraj Singh confirmed the incident during a press briefing.

According to police reports, on October 23, a team launched a raid in Nadangghuri while searching for the extremist responsible for the IED blast on the Kokrajhar railway line. During the operation, an encounter broke out, leading to the death of Apil Murmu alias Rohit Murmu (40), the key suspect in the blast.
From the encounter site, police recovered a pistol, grenade, voter ID card, and an Aadhaar card issued from Jharkhand. The search operation in the area is still underway.
SP Pushpraj Singh revealed that the accused, Apil alias Rohit Murmu, had previously been involved in a bomb blast in Jharkhand. After carrying out the explosion on a railway track in Jharkhand last October, he fled to Assam. Known by two identities, he was recognized as Rohit Murmu in Jharkhand and as Apil Murmu, a resident of Kachugaon Grahampur in Kokrajhar, in Assam.
Police sources said he initially joined an extremist outfit called Nasla, but after its surrender, he returned to Jharkhand and formed a new group named Nasna, becoming its commander. He was actively engaged in criminal and violent activities and later established ties with Maoist organizations.
A police team from Jharkhand had also arrived in Assam to assist in tracking him down. Authorities confirmed that Murmu had been involved in violent extremist operations since 2015.
