Indian Womens T20 World Cup Team Announcement This Saturday

Mumbai, May 2: The Indian women’s cricket team for the T20 World Cup 2026 will be announced this Saturday evening at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. However, the selectors are expected to face several dilemmas before finalizing the team.

The 10th edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in England from June 12 to July 5, with India aiming for the title. The selection committee meeting will take place at the BCCI headquarters, followed by a press conference to unveil the team.

Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, there are high expectations from the team, especially after India won the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 on home soil. Last December, India defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 at home, followed by a victory against England in their own backyard and a 2-1 win over Australia. However, the team faced a setback during their recent tour of South Africa, losing 4-1.

During the South Africa tour, the team management experimented with several players, resting vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and providing opportunities to new options. Nevertheless, the bowling department remains a concern for the team.

A significant portion of the squad is believed to be almost finalized, but the selection committee, led by Amita Sharma, will need to make crucial decisions for a 15-member team.

Batting all-rounder Anushka Sharma and left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma recently made their debuts and performed well. Additionally, power hitter Bharti Fulmali, returning to the team after a long hiatus, has also strengthened her claim.

It will be interesting to see if these three players secure spots in the T20 World Cup team, especially as the host nation England has selected three left-arm spinners for the tournament featuring 12 teams.

The Saturday meeting will not only focus on the T20 World Cup team but will also select the squad for the three-match T20 series against England and a lone Test match at Lord’s from July 10 to 13. Furthermore, the India A team will also be selected for three ODIs and three T20 matches against England A.

If India opts for additional pace bowling options for the World Cup, Nandini Sharma, who performed exceptionally well for Delhi Capitals in WPL 2026, may get a chance. The selection of Nandini Sharma and Kashvi Gautam, who made their T20 debuts during the South Africa tour, will also be intriguing, especially with Amanjot Kaur potentially sidelined due to a back injury.

Selectors may choose a 17 or 18-member team for the T20 series against England from May 8 to June 2, which could open the door for Vaishnavi Sharma as well. However, competition within the team is intense, and players like Radha Yadav, Sneh Rana, and G Kamalini face the risk of missing out on the World Cup squad.

Radha Yadav’s case is particularly interesting; she took six wickets during India’s T20 series in England last year but has not played in this format since then. She performed well in WPL 2026 for RCB, scoring 114 runs in nine matches, including a top score of 66, although she managed only two wickets.

After leading India A in the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament in Bangkok, where she scored 75 runs and took 10 wickets, Radha also excelled in the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy, scoring 224 runs in four innings, including a century, and taking 12 wickets.

Yastika Bhatia, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, underwent ACL surgery after injuring her knee during the ODI World Cup preparation camp in Visakhapatnam last year and has now resumed training. It remains to be seen whether she will replace Uma Chhetri as the second wicketkeeper or make her comeback through India A first.

Standby players for the World Cup may also be part of the India A team, as they will be touring England simultaneously. Harleen Deol and Pratika Rawal are likely to be sent with the India A team to acclimatize to the conditions and prepare for the lone Test.

With the T20 World Cup approaching, the selection meeting in Mumbai this Saturday evening will significantly shape India’s hopes for their first Women’s T20 World Cup trophy.
